Lucinda B. Bio & Teaching Methodology

About Lucinda-

She began riding at age 4 and trained in Classical Hunt Seat and Show Jumping until age 14. After raising two children, studying Early Childhood Education and Sociology, and running several businesses for over 28 years as a CEO, she returned to horses 30 years ago at 41. Her small Arabian, Nemo, became the heart of her journey back into horsemanship-his story is one of many featured in her book Being Herd.

Lucinda has since developed a deep, science-informed understanding of horses built through decades of hands-on experience, study, and research. At heart, she is both a researcher and a teacher-always eager to share what she’s learned.

Her teachers and mentors include:

  • Dr. Stephen Peters- Neuroscientist and author of Horse Brain Science: The Neuroscience of Ethical Horsemanship

  • Dr. Marthe Kiley-Worthington- Equine ethologist and author of Horse Watch: What It Is to Be Equine

  • Jaak Panksepp- Founder of Affective Neuroscience and author of Affective Neuroscience: The Foundations of Human and Animal Emotions

  • Sharon Wilsie- Founder of Horse Speak® and author of Essential Horse Speak: Continuing the Conversation

You can find many more resources on her Recommended Book List.

Teaching Philosophy & Methodology

Lucinda’s work is grounded in Equine Ethology, Neuroscience, Horse Speak and Emotion, Learning & Memory- the core components of her framework called The Equine Mandala. This approach bridges the gap between academic research and everyday horsemanship, making complex science accessible, practical, and deeply humane.

An early adopter of Horse Speak®, Lucinda became a Certified Horse Speak® Practitioner and is highly qualified to teach this evidence-based form of equine communication. Her presentations and clinics consistently receive enthusiastic reviews from participants.

She has worked with BLM mustangs through the TIP Trainer Program, rehabilitated psychologically compromised rescue horses, and studied the teachings of Tom and Bill Dorrance.

Her guiding belief is simple:

“Never leave your horse behind- not even for a moment.”

Lucinda’s teaching is experiential and hands-on. She breaks tasks into small, learnable pieces that help humans feel the horse’s worldview, and uses many unique videos to illustrate many concepts.

When horse and human do a task together, each learns how to move around the other with clarity and ease. With warmth, patience, and decades of experience, Lucinda teaches a gentle, intuitive, and science-backed approach that supports participants at every level of learning.

Her Being Herd™ Teaching Program centers around The Equine Mandala™, including:

  • Horse Speak®

  • Equine Neuroscience

  • Learning, Memory & Emotion

  • Equine Ethology

She presents complex topics-such as the central nervous system, neurochemicals of emotion, learning, and memory-in ways that are simple, practical, and immediately useful for every horse enthusiast.

Once you learn to see the horse’s perspective and main requirement safety, everything becomes possible- learning new things, going new places, or simply enjoying each other’s company.
